Dr. William Emmanuel Ghann received his B.S. degree in Chemistry from the University of Cape Coast in Ghana and his M.S. degree in Chemistry from East Tennessee State University in Johnson City, Tennessee. He earned his Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC), under the supervision of Dr. Marie-Christine Daniel Onuta.
Dr. Ghann is a Research Faculty Member in the Department of Natural Sciences at Coppin State University, where he teaches courses in Nanotechnology, Organic Chemistry, and General Chemistry. In addition to his teaching responsibilities, he conducts research at the Center for Nanotechnology, focusing on the synthesis, characterization, and application of nanomaterials for renewable energy, environmental, and biomedical applications.
His research interests include the development of multifunctional gold nanoparticles for biomedical imaging, electrospun nanofiber mats for antibacterial and wound-healing applications, dye-sensitized and lead-free perovskite solar cells, chemosensing, and terahertz spectroscopy. Dr. Ghann possesses extensive expertise in advanced nanotechnology instrumentation, including UV-Vis-NIR spectroscopy, FTIR, XRD, RAMAN, DLS, SEM, TEM, and electrochemical analysis systems.
Dr. Ghann’s research has been highly productive, resulting in over 50 publications in peer-reviewed journals and numerous conference presentations. His work has made significant contributions to the fields of nanomaterials, renewable energy, and sustainable technologies.
Beyond his research, Dr. Ghann is passionately committed to STEM education and mentorship. He mentors graduate and undergraduate students throughout the academic year and leads summer research training programs for high school students at the Center for Nanotechnology. Through initiatives supported by the Title III Grant, Constellation Energy to Educate Grant, and National Science Foundation (NSF) programs, he provides hands-on research experiences designed to inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers.
Outside the lab and classroom, Dr. Ghann enjoys playing racket sports, reading the Bible, and fellowshipping with other believers.
